When going to get artificial nails what should I ask for?

I want to go for the slightly fanned out look. I really like Tracy from Jerseylicious' french manicure with the pink & white, just not quite so fanned out. I also want them to have a more boxy look, rather than curved. This is only my second time getting artificial nails so I am slightly clueless. Also, should I go with acrylic, gel, solar..? And what are the price differences usually ? I'm just not sure how I should let the lady doing them know what I want. Thankss (:
