How do you program a "News" application?

I'm an iOS Developer that has a bit of trouble with conceptualizing certain elements of app development. If I have an RSS feed (which I understand how to parse) and a blog running on wordpress, how do I create an application that reads articles (i.e. how can I simply get the text body and images within the text?)
