My boyfriend is a Sergeant and NCO in the Army?

What exactly does the job of an NCO consist of? Is he responsible for watching suicidal inmates? Right now, a member of his unit was AWOL for 70+ days. He was brought back to base and since then he claims he has to supervise or 'babysit' him. I really want to believe what he tells me. However, It seems that almost every weekend something comes up so we get no time together, and we live two hours apart. Can someone educate me on exactly what he is responsible for, and what else I might need to be aware of in the future?
